Advice
I have spent a lot of time networking. At the Toronto Elevate Festival, I spent over 11 hours just talking to others!
During this time, I have collected lots of advice and tips that are very useful to me and here are the most important ones:
li>"Show don't tell" - Sigil Wen
Everyone has 24 hours a day
It's probably not Sigil who created this quote however it really helped me in my application
as I realized I needed to provide more evidence and less filler.
- "The most powerful person in the world is the storyteller." - Steve Jobs
This is the main reason why I'm reading Storyworthy by Matthew Dicks and practicing the art of storytelling.
- "每个人有二十四个小时" - Mom
Everyone has 24 hours a day
Its not that people have more time, its the way they use it that matters
- "Keep it simple" - Destin Wilson Sandlin
While giving advice to figureheads in the space industry, he tells them to keep it simple
I will interpret this as not overcompicating things, to solve and issue, I must understand it
- "The best way to learn is to internalize concepts by reflecting on yourself"
Sigil told me that to effectively learn, I must internalize ideas over just memorizing them
I will use this to aid me in studying new ideas
- "If you didn't do anything wrong, you didn't do anything" - Nicolas Ros
This pushes me to try and not be afraid of failing, done > perfect
- "Do things, even if you don't know of it's the right thing; go for it; done is better than perfect" - Correy Ellis
Sets the risk taking mindset: Done > Perfect
- "If you give yourself 2 weeks, it'll take 2 weeks; set shorter deadlines for yourself" - Correy Ellis
I use this for projects to boost productivity
- "Read what you love until you love to read" - Naval Ravikant
Helps me develop the habit of reading
- "Instead of "I don't have time" try saying "it's not a priority" and see how that feels"
Another level of reflection for when given a responsibility or opportunity
- "Ask Why" - TKS mindset
This simple yet effective advice allows me to push myself to think deeper on cases and myself
- "The person who likes walking will walk further than the person who likes the destination" - Unknown
The book I'm reading, Atomic Habits, characterizes the importance of focusing on your system over your goals:
"You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems"
Both these quotes set a better mindset for me in terms of productivity and self improvement
- "True learning is behavioural change, not memorization" - Sigil Wen
Sigil told me that to effectively learn, I must internalize ideas over just memorizing them
I will use this to aid me in studying new ideas
